What next?

Ok, open to suggestions. What on the art front has you stumped? Lofts? Track? fancy train shaders? animations or just some hints tips on modelling?
Feel free to request.

regards

Derek

  1. I have several questions (beginner questions, I am sorry to say), the problem is that I am working in 3DC and I am afraid that your answers may not translate well from 3DMax.

For animations I would like to see how to spin a fan, but at a 30 deg angle. And while I am certainly interested in Track, shaders, and any tips you have, I think my next request would be how to make lofts. Platforms with animated sims, or fences, both would be great, but I'll gladly learn whatever you are willing to teach me.

  2. I have great trouble getting the various elements right (normal, specular etc) in TrainBumpSpecEnvMask.fx, in order to end up with the correct colour in game.

    Any tips would be welcome.

  3. Hi Derek

I have created hundreds of texture sheets but I am still not sure on the the best combination of size and resolution to get the sharpest, clearest and best colour results. What would the ideal texture sheet look like?

  5. Hi Derek,

I would second Geoff on this, my mapping is horrid, but more than that I would really like to see a tutorial on getting the best looking results for train bodies, especially the multiple unit 'smooth' look like on the 450 or 444.

    Thanks

  6. ok, I will do a loft post, TrainBumpSpecEnvMask.fx, simple animation post, talk about how I texture (there is no right or wrong) maybe discuss some mapping techniques too.

Vlado, what you ask for is indepth and probably not something I could fit in here.

  7. Derek, I would appreciate any advice in regards texturing. This is the smoke and mirrors that escapes me completely. Must be my lack of artistic talent, but that is ok because I already know that.

  8. Hi Derek,

Could we have instruction on how to to water lofts in detail, and in particular, what shaders and textures to use?

    thanks,

    John.

  9. Another request for texturing advice please Derek, including tips on how to set up the mesh for optimum texturing.

  10. OK, I will look to show you how I work, but the model is less important than the texture. I almost always make the texture for scenery assets before I make the model. However as I said, there is no right or wrong way.

  11. Lofts and telegraph wires stump me if you could include that in the loft section

  12. Hello Derek. Love your blog! Id like to request a clarification, on using the Train_light_map_with_diffuse.fx shader. I followed along with your tutorial and it works great. What if i have two textures for the same object? Do I need to assign a Train_light map to the second texture, as well?
